Methylcobalamin B12 injection

We offer our patients methylcobalamin vitamin B12 injections in our office. This vitamin is the nutrient that works in conjunction with folate to synthesize DNA and red blood cells along with the myelin sheath around nerve cells.

When B12 levels are low patients will exhibit symptoms of anemia (megaloblastic anemia and pernicious anemia) and nerve disease:

  • dementia
  • neuropathy
  • multiple sclerosis
  • and more…

[1] A recent research article suggests that B12 deficiency is more common than once thought. [2] Our current serum (blood) levels of B12 may be too low to detect B12 deficiency and no additional markers for B12 are utilized such as urinary methymalonic acid (MMA). [3]

What are the injection benefits?

Why is injecting the vitamin an important therapy for better treatment outcomes for patients?

Injecting B12 remains the gold standard for the treatment of B12 deficiency. The injection aspect bypasses the body’s need to absorb B12 which is one of the most insidious forms of the deficiency. In fact, patients who regularly use acid suppressing medications, diabetic medications or patients with gastrointestinal allergies or infections are at risk as these medications  all can cause malabsorption of the vitamin.
